Johnson Sworn In as New PHMSA Administrator

Department of Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters announced that Carl T. Johnson was sworn in as the new administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. "Carl will use his vast experience to make sure that the movement of energy and hazardous materials remains safe, efficient, and reliable," Peters said.

Johnson was nominated for the post by President Bush on Oct. 30, 2007, and received U.S. Senate confirmation on Dec. 19, 2007. He comes to the department after serving as president of the Compressed Gas Association. Prior to that, he served as special assistant to Representative Amory Houghton of New York. Earlier in his career, he served as director of federal government relations at Corning Glass Works.

Johnson received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his master's degree from The George Washington University.
