Two Reappointed to Canada's Hazmat Information Review Council
Tony Clement, the Canadian federal government's minister of Health, has reappointed Dennis Nikkel and George Harold Stewart to the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission’s Council of Governors for three-year terms. "It comes as a great pleasure to announce the re-appointments of Mr. Nikkel and Mr. Stewart to the HMIRC Council of Governors," Clement said this week. "Their continued dedication and active involvement have contributed greatly to the success of the council over the past three years and will surely continue throughout the next term."
Nikkel represents Manitoba on the council. He has worked in occupational hygiene for 34 years and is currently director of the Occupational Hygiene Branch of the Workplace Safety and Health Division of the Manitoba Department of Labour and Immigration. He developed the
Guidelines for Working with Asbestos, Asbestos Operations and Maintenance Guidelines
and the
Worker's Guide to Air Quality in Offices, Schools and Hospitals,
among other guidelines, Health Canada said.
George Harold Stewart has been working in occupational health and safety in Prince Edward Island for 27 years. He was appointed to administer OSH activities related to the construction of the Fixed Link, a bridge linking PEI to New Brunswick, and was the first chairperson of the PEI Chapter for the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, which is a partner in NAOSH Week every year. Stewart will continue to serve the HMIRC council as workers' representative for the Workers Compensation Board of PEI.
